Daghestan
or Shirvan Pile Rug
First half of the 19th century
This piece features careful drawing in a wide range of saturated
colors. The format is very square, with an unusually tall
prayer arch. The main border is most unusual. Especially
pleasing are the triangular shapes around the inner border and the
arch, utilizing all the colors in the palette and providing a very
lively effect. For similar pieces, see Kaffel's plate 61
1, as
well as the cover of Oriental Rug Review 9/5 (June-July,
1989).
